Traditional Water Gilding, January 12-15 2027

This class focuses on methods in traditional gilding.  These are methods that were employed historically to gild wooden surfaces and make these surfaces look like solid gold.  Methods in surface preparation with discussions on preparing rabbit skin glue and chalk gesso, bole clay and different karats of gold. Students will learn how to gild on flat and carved surfaces and how to burnish the gold to create the look of solid gold.


Tools needed: All students should bring a gilder’s tip, gilder’s mop, sable brush, gilder’s pad, gilder’s knife and agate burnisher.
